Why are you a professional photographer?
Well, not because I expect to become a millionaire! Truthfully, I’ve always had a creative instinct and since my childhood holidays to the Dales and Lake District I’ve been captivated by the landscape and how to distil this into a beautiful photograph.
Being an outdoors type I served for two amazing years in the Royal Marines but after a while I’d had enough of being deprived of sleep and suffering hypothermia on Dartmoor so I went back to Uni to study law. I felt I needed a career while I learnt my photography skills and invested the substantial sums of money it takes to acquire professional equipment. Predictably though, the law didn’t satisfy me either and I didn’t spend a single day wishing I wasn’t out running my own photography business. Finally, at the age of 31 I turned pro and I have never been happier with my job.
What’s it like having you as my photographer?
I’m calm, patient, unobtrusive and passionate about producing work you will love and enjoy.
I let your day unfold naturally without interuption and I capture it in a relaxed manner. I’ve been complimented for this many times and I’m proud to be able to produce a diverse range of creative photographs for my wedding clients without being bossy or pushy in anyway at all. I don’t take up loads of time with the bride and groom-I try and complete all your portraits in around half an hour- and once the formal group shots are done I adopt a documentary, reportage style to capture the moments as they happen and let you and your guests get on with enjoying the party you've laid on for them.
With this approach to photographing your wedding you'll find you can feel relaxed leading up to the day, safe in the knowledge that I've got a thorough grip on your photography and know, through good pre planning, what you want me to do and when we will do the various shots we have planned.
I do love the creative side of my work but I do feel that good planning and preperation is essential so I can get on with the job on the day and you can feel confident it's all in hand in the run up to your wedding day.
Why is it important to have good quality photographs for the business’ website, PR and marketing materials-can’t we just snap away ourselves?
You can but you’ll regret it. Ask yourself this-if you have invested time and money in good website and brochure design and written good punchy text, why are you going to undermine this with poor photography? People see and react to images first-why else do newspapers have huge pictures on their front page? If your pictures are poor people will make immediate negative assumptions about your business and it’s level of quality.
With good, professional photography your business will look as good as it deserves to. You will also have a handy stock of images you can use in future without having to commission someone again or use the office junior with their point and shoot camera!
How long will you stay at the wedding?
This depends on how long you’ve booked me for. My pricing page has all the details of how long you can have me. The 5-hour Poppy collection is generally sufficient to provide cover up to the beginning of the wedding breakfast. The full day Tulip and Dahlia collections generally cover up to the first dance. Extra hours can be added on though if there is fireworks later in the evening, for example.
It’s often hard to separate one wedding photographer from the rest. Any tips?
Just like buying anything, in paying for photography you need to feel sure that it is the very best you can get for your money. Don’t risk wishing you’d used someone else after the event so consider carefully what makes a good photographer.
In terms of wedding photographers, keep an eye out for how many have a ‘Travel’ or ‘Personal Work’ section - you can get a feel for whether they have that extra level of ability or not by seeing if they can do more than just wedding work.
I produce top class artistic photography that is accepted by the most discerning picture editors of national publications and agencies. I’m contracted to 5 major agencies including Getty-the biggest international agency in the world- who is very selective about the photographers it chooses to represent. They supply the likes of Lonely Planet with many of the front covers for their famous guide books. And that’s where I am as a photographer-selling my work to the biggest and best.
Don’t compromise on the quality of your photography and please don’t end up using a photographer pretending to be able to do something they can’t. By this I mean look carefully at the photographs and decide if you like the style and quality and feel you would be proud to see yourself in those images. I'm clear about my style-it's high end, stylish and classicly simple. I don't do fancy fashion style wedding shoots or use gimmicks to get a reaction-I'm quiet and unobtrusive and I shoot natural photographs of real moments between real people as the day unfolds.
How much are extra pages in the album?
Each extra spread is £50 for a Press Album, £75 for a Press Book and £100 for a Classic Matted album, which includes the design time, Photoshop work and album space to be manufactured by Queensberry. There’s no limit to the number of images you put on the spread but I wouldnlt squeeze more than 12 on.
How do we buy the photographs of the event?
Depending on the type of event, I can have the prints available to purchase on the night. Either way, all the photographs will be available to view and purchase via my website and you will have your own dedicated gallery set up on my website.
How much do you cost?
My daily rate is £400.00 and a half-day is £250, plus expenses such as travel and subsistence. You can also hire me by the hour for £60.00 per hour.
What can we expect from you if we hire you?
I used to be a commercial lawyer and whilst I’m glad to be free from all that now I’m still meticulous with detail, well organised and very structured in how I go about planning your photography. Photography is arty and fun for me but only because underpinning that is sound research, planning and preparation done alongside you.
So, you can expect from me:
• a full marketing and brand photography planning meeting where we hammer out what you need your photography for and what you need it to do for you.
• Close communication with you or your nominated person for sorting out the details involved in pre-shoot planning
• Provision of professional quality portable lighting, rather than extra hiring costs
• A solid days work, from dawn ‘til dusk if necessary
• All editing and post production of images
• Images provided in low, web resolution, and a hi res copy for your in-house library.
• Staff portraits in either a studio or location setting.
How far will you travel to our wedding?
I travel both nationally and internationally for weddings. In the UK, travel is charged at 40p per mile with a maximum 2.5 hour drive. For weddings more than a 2.5 hours drive from Canterbury, accommodation must be paid for at the nearest Holiday Inn or similar. For destination weddings where a flight is required, expenses will also include all transport, accommodation and food.
How many images are in the album?
My collections are priced to include a certain number of pages which is usually enough for between 80-100 images. If you want more, no problem, we can work out the extra cost when we know how many you feel you need to tell the story of your day.
What are our engagement shoot photos for?
Apart from being a nice set of up to date professional portraits of you both they are ideal for choosing image to be mounted in a large plain mount for people to sign on the day.
You do weddings, events and landscapes-how did that combination come about?
I first learnt the art of using natural lighting from becoming a landscape and travel photographer. I then found I still had a desire to master creative portraiture and this led me into weddings and events where I use both day light and studio flash lighting equipment on location to produce my work. I love the creative challenge each provides and the split works really well for me.
Because I’m skilled in both types of photography I’m a better photographer than someone who can only do one or the other. I’m not a generalist-I specialise in these areas and they are all an integral part of my business and my skill set.
How many days of photography do we need to allow for our new look website?
Minimum of one, maximum of five. It all depends on how much you want photographed, and how quickly we can get through it all. Some things take longer than others-if you need to set up a show room or arrange a fleet of vehicles this can take much longer than a series of striking images for the homepage.
I suggest, as a guide, that if you just want your website illustrated and have a nice collection of extra photos to keep in stock then you should start with two days. We can then review what we’ve got and if you want more, no problem.
We’re tempted to just bite the bullet and pay substantially for a PR company to just handle the whole rebrand, including the photography, for my website-should we do this?
This depends what you want to achieve. If all you need is a set of new, creative photographs for your website and marketing materials and a good stock of images to draw upon in the future then I see no reason why you should have to use an agency.
Cut out the middle man, I say, and lets work together on producing the photographs you need rather than paying extra to an agency only for them to send their photographer in and do the same exercise with you at much higher cost.
If you have a web designer already then all you need is to give a bit of time and thought to how you want this illustrated (which you can do with me and the web guy/girl) and we can easily produce a shoot list of specific shots you need between ourselves, work out what is involved in each shot and see how this can be fitted into your budget.
What list of images do I need to give you?
The only images I need you to list are any group photos. My advice is to stick to a maximum of 6 groups-they take about 4 minutes each by the time you gather everyone together so this can easily take up nearly half an hour of your day. If you have lots of groups of friends don’t worry because I can do these while you are all having your canapés.
Can we approve the album before it goes to print?
Of course! This album is going to be very valuable; it’s all your professional wedding photographs in a top end album so want you to be completely happy with it. After I have done the design, I will send you a copy for your approval. If you want to change a couple of things that’s fine, up to 8 changes are free.
How does it work balancing them all together?
I find they each give me very different challenges and this keeps my creativity for each fresh. I like nothing better than a wedding in a nice location where I can stay on and produce some landscape work afterwards. All weddings from British estates to tropical paradises gratefully accepted!
In all seriousness, I gave up my career as a lawyer because I wanted more variety in my working life so just being a wedding photographer and nothing else was not an option for me. By mixing up what I do across these three areas I keep my mind fresh and hungry for the next job that comes along.
What happens if you are sick or unable to attend on the day?
If for some unforeseen reason I cannot make your wedding I will rely on a network of other photographers who I feel are similar to me in style to undertake your photography.
How far will you travel to cover an event?
I travel everywhere in the UK and abroad with my work. I have a mobile studio and lighting system and I use extended trips as an opportunity to do some of my landscape work so travelling distances is not an issue for me. I do not charge travel for assignments within 10 miles of Canterbury.
I need advice on what kit to buy; what do you use for your wedding, commercial and landscape work?
I'm quite happy to list my gear but it's a little useless without seeing what you can achieve with this kit so do also have a look at my blog for reviews of the kit I use (there's also a specif reader question answering what you can buy on a budget here) and do check out the Learning Lounge for details of how I use my kit to get particular shots. You’ll learn more from this than simply reading a boring list of gear.
What I will tell you first is the things I think you need to think about to get excellent photographs either at a wedding, on a commercial job or out in the landscape because the basics are the same across the board:
First you need a tripod. Don’t skimp on this or the head, it’s the most important investment you can make and the foundation of all good photography, especially outdoor work but often also studio work, from portraiture to fashion photography. My tripod and head combination cost over a grand and it’s the best grand I spent because it frees me to get on with taking the pictures I see. Using a tripod also instils a disciplined, methodical working process that means your creative output can be of the highest quality.
Next you need lenses. Note we haven’t even thought about a camera yet. Good lenses are the hallmark of good pictures. You can have the best body in the world (I don’t mean a six pack, I mean a camera body) but with a cheap kit lens your creativity will be severely limited and your pictures will lack sharpness and quality. Buy the best lenses on the market. This means zooms with f2.8 apertures throughout the focal range, made with robust materials and excellent glass with flare reducing qualities. If you’re buying primes get ones with perspective control facilities. If you’re buying telephotos, get ones with image stabilisation. Yes, they all cost a small fortune but it’s not an issue I will compromise on. My agrument is that good lenses will last years, perhaps fprever, but camera bodies date, wear and need replacing every so often but with good glass, whatever new body you acquire your lens will snap satraight on and be fit for purpose.
Now we can think about camera bodies. Entry level slr’s have nearly all the same functionality of even the most expensive top end models so don’t be put off by them while you learn and if you’re on a budget. You better off investing in the tripod and lenses than a top body at the outset; technology moves fast in the photography world and you’ll soon find an upgraded model is out for all the different price brackets. This means you can always pick up what used to be the bees knees in camera bodies fairly cheaply second hand. For the record, I use only new bodies and I always have two-one for back up. I use canon gear but I know Nikon cameras have some advantages that Canon’s don’t. It works both ways and you have to pick one and just accept there will always be some annoying limitations, even on the top models. For more discussion on which camera to buy read my blog post here.
If you want to do portraiture and use flash lighting, you’ll need extra lighting gear. A top end flash for your camera is a must and for real creative freedom some portable studio lighting kit that you can take into the field is essential. Don't be afriad to play with a good flash, a light stand, shoot through brolly and wireless trigger. You can achieve a lot with just this simple set up and Strobist.com is a marvellous blog from a pro photographer to help you create some amazing work with this simple set up.
If you’ve got kit that reflects the above you’re pretty much decked out with all the gear you need. Some other stuff to think about would be:
a. a spirit level for your camera’s flash hot shoe-say goodbye to wonky horizons for ever.
b. A good bag to carry it all in.
c. Software (like Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom or Aperture) and a mac to process your images on-get one and you won’t look back.
d. Hard drives to store al your precious images on, plus more for back up, both at home and in the field.
e. A polariser-great filter for producing punchy, saturated colours in the sky.
f. Lens cleaning cloths, brushes and blowers.
I also carry two EOS 5DMKII cameras. My lenses are: a 17-40mm f4, 24-70mm f2.8, 70-200mm f2.8 IS, 2x teleconverter, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro and a 580 EXII flash and the Safari flash system from Lencarta. I also have various brollies, stands and light modifiers to suit the shot at hand. I fire my flashes wirelessly (I hate cables running everywhere) with the Elinchrom Skyport system and I have two sets in case one fails. It's never happened to date....I also have enough batteries for my camera and flash guns to light Oxford Circus at Christmas. With a digital camera system many of my old Lee filters were sold for a song on Ebay. All that is left is the excellent Lee filter system to hold their graduated neutral densities, a polariser and a 10 stop ND filter from B+W.
Ultimately, apart from wives, Formula 1 and super yachts, there’s few things more expensive in life than photography. You’ll always want/need more kit; from more megapixels to better computers to the latest version of Photoshop. Just don’t lose sight of the fact that none of this produces good photographs, only you and your creative mind does, and the kit is nothing more than the means to that end.
What’s your favourite ever photograph?
My photograph of the Second Severn Crossing was a rare combination of stunning light and weather conditions. It’s won me a number of prizes and I’m very proud of it. I also consider my shot of Peveril Castle at dawn a favourite because it’s such a rare display of perfect dawn light on a stunning subject. My favourite wedding photographs are the one’s where the bride has told me they’ve put it on the wall because, if my work has made that impact on her, that’s a big inspiration for doing what I do.
How long will it take before we receive our album?
It takes around 8 weeks from the time that you approve your layout. Queensberry don’t simply run these things off a printer-they are handmade so this takes time.
Where do you stand on digital manipulation or ‘Photoshopping’?
Generally, I don’t do anything on my computer, or ‘digital darkroom’, that wouldn’t have been done in the days of dark rooms and wet printing. Adding contrast, saturation, vibrance, enhancing greens in trees or skin tones has always been part of the photography 'processing' required from taking a slide or negative. Without it we’d have a world full of pretty yucky pictures!
With film, we’d choose different types (remeber Agfa and Fuji Velvia?) to make skin tones look nicer or to add punchy colours to our landscapes. We’d also do all sorts of clever stuff when the film was processed by the lab and then we’d do more clever stuff in the dark room to make things look good. Now I just do it in computer and exercise precise control over what is done to my photographs. Same end, different means, that's all.
I hate a lot of HDR images-so many photographs that appear now look fake, or photoshopped, because they are. They are not accurate representations of what was seen by the eye. This I avoid like the plague. I’ve no problem removing a blurry bird in my skies or ugly tin can from my foregrounds but I can’t see the point in creating something that simply wasn’t there.
Like a lot of pro’s, I do use the available technology to my advantage to produce my photographs and this is often negatively interpreted as meaning ‘manipulation’. It isn’t, no more than anything is manipulation when one person says you should photograph the Eiffel Tower like this and another says you should do it like that. We all see things differently and impose our view of things. When we produce a photograph it's because it’s your personal view, your 'manipulation' of what you have seen, where you’ve chosen to include certain things and exclude others from your photograph. That is all I am doing, providing my personal interpretation of the subjects I photograph, from composition choice through to colour corrections right down to the paper choice I print onto.
How do I reserve my wedding date?
Once we’ve spoken about your wedding and you have decided what you want from me we will complete a Booking Form to agree everything. On signing this and handing over a 20% deposit your day is reserved and no other bookings will be taken. The remainder of the payment is due 30 days before the wedding. Dates are booked on a first-come basis.
Why are you a good choice for doing photography of my business and my staff?
Your photography will help you give your business an identity and a ‘look’ and ‘feel’ that compliments your branding. I will produce photographs of your business that are bespoke and tailored to you and what you do. This will help you’re your marketing materials some real life and a strong, real identity with the people in your business who will be dealing with your customers.
Have you got any advice for anyone else looking to turn pro?
In no particular order I’ve picked up various gems of advice from others from all walks of life as well as learning my own lessons:
a) Always take photographs of what inspires you, not what you think others will be inspired by. Then think about how you will sell them. To do otherwise strips the heart and soul out of what is an inherently creative and artistic endeavour which will only show through in your work.
b) My wonderful wife, Sarah, is a stickler for using only the best kit. She’s a fantastic Doctor and never compromises on quality in the tools she uses because those tools help her to do her job to the best of her ability. So, from your camera gear to the editing of your work, only deal with and be associated with the best. Just bite the bullet; buy it, learn to use it and then get on with the serious but fun business of creating exciting photographs.
c) My good friend James taught me to play poker. One particular lesson that sticks in my mind is this: ‘Laddo (his nickname for me), never fall in love with your own cards.’ It’s brilliant advice and has saved me considerable sums at the table. It’s also saved me considerable disappointment before the various editors I sell my work to. I never look at my work and think ‘It’s perfect, it's an unbeatable hand.’ As soon as you think your own pictures are the best in the world you set yourself up for a hard fall and anyway it’s completely self indulgent and delusional and the preserve of moldy old blokes at camera clubs that are more interested in their kit than taking decent photographs. Always strive to improve and better your own and work and that of your peers. Never settle for what you’ve done, always strive for self improvement. That's not to say you shouldn't apreciate what you've done well and when you have got a good shot, just don't rest on your laurels is all I'm saying.
d) Never obsess about camera kit, computers or photoshop techniques. Do obsess about producing excellent, flawless, photographs instead. The highly regarded Charlie Waite once told me he had about what he considered to be 5 perfect images and that’s from a life time spent at the top of the profession. I fthink I've got one. So there's plenty of work to do!
e) My final year as a lawyer was spent working in house for a inspirational businessman in South London. He was a gem of a man to work for; self made, flamboyant and an extraordinarily clever, successful and wealthy individual. I owe him a lot for sitting down with me and teaching me the basic principles of business; the ins and outs of producing something, marketing it, selling it and then looking at the bigger picture (pun not intended) and how it could be expanded. Taking great photographs is actually the easy bit compared with selling them and running a small business is actually no ‘small’ undertaking. Getting genuine business experience in the commercial world first pays dividends when you finally set up on your tod and if you can get it from someone like my old boss (who could sell ice to Eskimos) the more the better.
f) Find photographer’s whose work you are inspired by and learn to study and deconstruct it. I spent a lot of my early twenties literally tracing in the footsteps of the photographer’s whose work inspired me. I went to locations all over the globe and found their locations, even their compositions. However, I wasn’t there to simply copy what they did, I was there to learn the process that led to them creating their photographs. I wanted to learn their mindset, how they must have found their locations, planned their images and produced them so brilliantly. Sometimes I’d actually get better light than they did and produce a better photograph, but, crucially, not an original one. Ultimately, you need to stop doing this when that feeling that you’re not really creating anything new creeps in and starts to frustrate you. Then it’s time to take what you’ve learnt and cut off this comfort blanket of following in your peers’ footsteps and strike out on your own. Then, when you start producing your own, truly original work, you’ll feel real pride and a sense that you are a creator of fresh, new work, produced under your own steam which stands on it’s own merits. It’s a great feeling.
g) Wedding photography is a business that succeeds not just on producing consistently good photographs but also being good around people. You need a flow of work and referrals and you wont get this without first producing the goods and second being a nice person to have around all day. Always be nice to people. You never know who you might be talking to (it could be someone in a position to offer you a big break). It costs nothing and is excellent PR.
h) Learn from the pros. These days it seems everyone is running workshops but I don’t see that many who produce work that inspires me or which I’d pay to go on. When I was learning my trade I chose to go abroad for a week with an established pro that I felt produced the level of quality that I aspired to. He taught me more in that week than I’d learnt in the previous year of reading magazines and the like. If you go on a workshop with the right frame of mind and the right person your photography will take a quantum leap forward. Don’t be a know it all or think you’ve got certain areas perfected-everything is always up for review and improvement (see c) above). Instead, be like a sponge, listen to very tit bit, watch them like a hawk, ask every question you can think of, listen to the answers given to others’ questions and try things outside your comfort zone.
i) Until you’re very rich and in demand, never turn down work you know you can competently do, even if it’s a break even exercise. Build contacts and network, get your work ‘out there’ and build relationships to gather business momentum.
j) Never accept work you can’t do an excellent job on. It will take years to build your name, yet minutes to kill it at the outset by cocking up a job you’re not experienced to handle. For example, I wouldn’t even try and do a wildlife commission-it’s a whole new discipline and skill set from travel and landscape work, which I am well versed in and good at.
k) Use your friends. If you’ve followed the advice in g) and been nice to people you’ll have plenty of pals and if, like me, they are all rather good at their respective jobs you’ll have a fantastic array of business advisors to draw upon. From accountants to marketing and advertising managers, to HR, financial planning and branding and project managers. They will all give you free advice (because you’re nice, remember) which others may be paying thousands for. They’ll also network for you passing you leads here and there from within their terribly high powered corporate circles.

There are so many wedding photographers to choose from-what makes you stand out?
Put simply; my wedding clients love the photographs I produce because I see and create imaginative and stylish photographs. People also enjoy having me being around them and they actively recommend me to their friends, which is the ultimate endorsement.
I will spend time talking to you about how you want your day photographed and how I can fit this into your plans. I’m easy going and go about my work quietly and effectively. I also produce exquisite, personalised wedding albums from the finest producer in the world.
Like many photographers, I have invested in a lot of professional equipment but, more importantly, I really know how to use it.
In terms of what you should budget for, if you want a cheap wedding photographer looking to earn some extra cash on the side expect to pay up to £500 but do consider whether at that rate they will be able to afford insurance, spare gear in case of equipment failure on the day or even good quality gear. Most importantly decide if their work is really what you expect. If you have the budget and would like a quality service from a skilled professional with years of experience and a creative, professional approach to your photography you will receive a much more high end service and collection of photographs that will endure for the rest of your lives.
What albums do you offer?
I offer three handmade albums from the world’s best album maker-Queensberry. You can choose either a Press Album, a Press Book or a Classic Matted album.
There’s no right or wrong choice, it depends on what you want from your wedding album; the Press Album has pages like a high class hardback colour coffee table book with images printed to the page, the Press Book is like a traditional album with images mounted into thick card pages and the Classic Matted album offers all the versatility for album design that Queensberry are renowned for, from winged pages to images printed across two pages for extra impact.
I’ll show you samples of them and you can decide.
Why should I book you to cover our event?
Timing is everything with events-that and getting good quality photographs that people will enjoy. I’m good at putting people at ease, helping them feel comfortable in front of camera and producing a series of stylish photographs in a short space of time.
I don’t want anyone to be disappointed or have queues of people waiting so it’s vital that I’m efficient on the night and help make the whole event a success..
What happens after I’ve booked you?
If you have asked for an engagement shoot we will arrange a date to do this. It’s a perfect way to see your venue together and take some fun shots to relax you in front of camera and plan the actual day. If you prefer not to have this shoot then we will speak about a month before the wedding to go through your final plans for the day and deal with any final issues that we need to before I see you on the morning of your wedding day.
Do you have a second shooter?
Not always. If the wedding is such that there is lots happening in different places at different times I may bring one along. If you require a fully insured professional we will discuss the cost of this but otherwise I will use someone I consider to be up and coming for some of the straight forward shots while I concentrate on the main event.
What sort of events do you photograph-is it anything from Annual balls and dinners to Christmas parties?
That’s right, I bring my portable studio to an event like a school ball, office summer party or charity ball and set it up so people can have stylish, high quality portraits taken of themselves and their friends and family.
When do we get to see our photographs?
Usually by the time you return from honey moon your photographs will be ready to view. If you are just having them on disc you receive them in a slideshow and as hi res files for printing. If you have asked me for an album you will receive an album proof too.
Do you have insurance?
Yes, I am insured for Public Liability and Professional Indemnity.
Where does the Engagement shoot happen?
Ideally at the wedding venue but failing that, somewhere mutually convenient to each of us.
