Scotney Castle, Kent, UK The tranquil setting of this castle, the mirror like reflection and the strong side lighting combine to good effect. In fact this was one of those situations where I could easily take a series of compositions that were all 'keepers'. A mental workflow is essential though-otherwise the 'headless chicken', scatter gun approach takes over! I look for the wide angle shot first-and go through some instictive mental decision making-to add leaves and braches in the top of the frame or not? Include something in the forground or just plain reflection? Then I try one with less 'space', maybe change position or height and include another feature. For this shot I wanted a frame filling view that took in the interesting component parts of the scene, from my feet to the sky, in one tight composition. Whatever my approach, I always try and resist the urge to shoot everything in a hurry-the results are usually very mediocre and I think it's better to miss some chances but really nail those that I choose to concentrate on.
