Field Notes

Whitstable’s oysters date back to Roman times and they are now cultivated out in the Thames Estuary on a series of trestles which are revealed at low tide. Waiting for the sunset to be in the right position with the tide at the right level and some clouds is not an easy combination but it finally came together here. The exposure was set to a few seconds to smooth out the water and reflect the calm serenity of the scene created by the soft, pastel colours in the sky. This technique allows me to blend the sea and sky together so that they are both in harmony with each other and capture both the mood and experience of the moment I was there.
