Field Notes

Arriving early to capture the famous Bondi beach at dawn I found a place busy with activity; from exercise routines on the beach to surfers looking for the next wave. In the calm of the pre dawn light where the colour balance is shifted towards blue I noticed this surfer stood dead still as he looked out to sea. With the various activity going on around him it seemed a fitting to use a shutter speed that would capture this idea of his solitude as everything else buzzed around him. I find using shutter speeds to emphasise movement a fun, creative effect which coupled with the right exposure and composition (here I've trimmed out the sky above to focus attention just on the surfer and the action going on around him) creates that sense of tension necessary in a photograph of this kind.
