Field Notes

In his compositions, Turner seemed not preoccupied with the rule of thirds for creating a sense of depth. Instead, he used tone and texture in sea or land and sky to convey a sense of looking into and through the scene. Although I have included a ship for scale, the vessel is small and feeble compared to the huge elements of sea and sky that envelope it which Turner often portrayed, even with large vessels.  Giving more prominence to the elements and how the light, sea and sky interact with each other has produced what I hope is more akin to how Turner interpreted the sea and sky in his work.
