The role of the Greek Orthodox church is the development of the island is not to be underestimated. But unlike the churches in the UK that seem to be built to express the power of God through their size and sold construction, the churches here fit within the rest of the villages as an aesthetic component alongside the houses, rather than in superiority to them. Only the bell towers and crosses on the top of the elegeant blue domes mark them out as distinct from the other buildings.
