Field Notes

The urban landscape offers good scope for creating unusual compositions which may not work, or could look a bit gimmicky, applied to a traditonal, natural landscape. This scene could be photographed any number of ways but in choosing a super wide panoramic composition I found I could accentuate the sense of being in the small Tudor street surrounded by the striking architecture of the period and maintain an all important sense of depth into the photograph and down the street. During the day, I doubt I would have made this picture work; the shadows cast on one side of the street would have been unsightly and the success of this photograph relies upon the warm tungsten lights in the pub on the right as much as the twinkling late evening light in the sky which would not have been on during the daytime. EOS 5DMKII, 17-40mm, 20secs, f11 ISO 200.
