Field Notes

The Kent coast is, at times, a true theatre of light with lovely views out over the English Channel and Thames Estuary. Shot on the Isle of Thanet, this sea pool makes for a nice subject to offset against the timeless movement of sea and sky, a theme inspired by my studies of Turner’s paintings of the same area.  30 secs at f11 and ISO 50 was enough to capture the movement in sea and sky with a Lee 10 Stopper filter and 1 Stop ND grad. Normally, they say, the horizon shouldn't be in the middle of the composition but with seascapes I take my lead from JMW Turner's peerless works where this approach was often favoured by him.
