Field Notes

In paintings like ‘Venice from the Laguna’ (c.1835) Turner kept sea and sky separated by texture and here I have reversed this approach by using a short shutter speed of 13 secs to keep the cloud distinct from the water.  This keeps sea and sky better separated, in terms of their texture.  Like Turner, I also have less prominent focal points in my photo to serve as my harder, fixed points of interest so the sea and sky are ever more important to the composition.  Had I tried to blend sea and sky together through a much longer shutter speed I fear it could have ended up a bit boring and therefore very un-Turner!
