Early November in the English Lake district is very special and Lizzie and I are delighted to be able to offer a photography workshop in a area that is very special to us.
From sumptuous autumn colour to colourful forests, striking light over the fells and lakes and, with luck, some misty valleys the Lake district is a creative photography playground.
We'll be situated right in the heart of the charming Borrowdale, amidst some of the most stunning scenery in the Lakes.
We’ve chosen this area because it puts us nicely between Derwent Water and Buttermere so we can respond swiftly to the light, with a number of characterful woodlands, crags and quarries also within easy reach. We are also within driving distance of a multitude of other fabulous locations that we know and love visiting, including the Langdales, Hodge Close and Grasmere, to name a few.
We will be based in the lovely and comfortable Borrowdale Hotel, and our workshop is designed to offer a balance between visiting a variety of locations, learning the technical skills you require and looking carefully at creative interpretation of a scene.
We will undoubtedly see some great vistas but we will also be concentrating on the smaller, more intimate details to be found within the landscape - looking at ways of capturing our surroundings with more abstract interpretations, something our combined skillset is well suited to.
We want to make sure our time with you is as fun and productive as possible so, if it rains, we won’t be sat inside twiddling our thumbs; we have a full collection of digital skills sessions together with printing and book/photo album making tips and demonstrations.
Between us we have considerable experience of preparing images for print, working with different types of paper, curating images, preparing exhibitions and various forms of book-making.
We believe this strikes a good balance between shooting on location and practical help with the necessary post production side together with a plan for inclement weather so that you can leave with a wealth of new knowledge and skills to compliment your photography out in the field.
Our workshops are full of fun, light hearted but with a clear plan and itinerary which we can adapt according to weather and conditions.
This is a Tripod Travels workshop - running in conjunction with my friend and colleague; the brilliant Lizzie Shepherd. Lizzie and I have thoroughly enjoyed running workshops together for over 6 years now and are thrilled with the positive feedback we’ve had on how enjoyable and productive our workshops are.
We're each brand ambassadors for Lee Filters )Lizzie) and Kase Filters (Alex) and we can loan you a set of these filters if you wish to try them out. Our workshop particopants also benefit from an exclusive discount code on Kase filters, availble from Alex.
Autumn in the Lake District : 5 day photography workshop FAQs
Can I borrow a Kase filters kit?
As a Kase ambassador I have access to demo kits you are welcome to try. The Kase filter kit is the best filter kit on the market and I use it in my professsional work. The kit includes a big stopper, little stopper, polariser and ND grads. Please ask in advance and advise of the filter ring sizes of any lenses you may be bringing. You will find this marked on the lens as you look at the front lens element and around the edge. The measurement will be expressed in mm.
I’m travelling alone, can I have single occupancy rooms?
Yes, this can be arranged and we will arrange for your room to be en suite.
If it’s Fully booked what can I do?
Please get in touch via email or telephone and we can put you on the reserve list. If a place becomes available we'll let you know.
What kit & caboodle should I bring?
A camera, tripod and a selection of lenses - ideally covering ultra wide angle to telephoto. Tripods are essential-let me know if you dont own one. Also spare batteries and memory cards.
If you dont have any filters (polariser, ND Grads, Stopper Filters etc) and want to try them and learn how to use them, we have kits you can borrow. Just tell us in advannce.
Also, bring good walking boots and clothing for any kind of weather and wellies are strongly recommended for UK workshops. Comfortable backpack and waterproofs for you and your gear. It can be chilly in the evening so warm clothes are recommended.
Water bottle will be handy as at times we will be out in the open but we are never far from a cafe, pub and/or public toilet.
What time does the Lake District Workshop start and end?
We will meet at our hotel at 2.00pm on Wednesday, finishing mid to late morning on Sunday.
