Kent Photography Workshop - Welcome to Turner Country!

JMW Turner lived in Kent and famously remarked that it ‘had the loveliest skies in all of Europe.’ With Turner’s beautiful words (and work) in mind, we think it also makes for a perfect place for landscape photography.

This is a Triopd Travels workshop in collaboration with my friend and master photographer Lizzie Shepherd.  The workshop will be based in Broadstaors or Margate where we will enjoy a comfortable hotel by the sea.

During the workshop, we will explore the fascinating land and seascapes that define this unique area and which inspired Turner to paint so much of his wonderful work.  From shipwrecks and abandoned industry on the River Medway to soaring white chalk cliffs, to twisted and decaying sea defences to the marvellous tidal sea pools around Thanet and plenty more in between. We find that using Turner as a reference and considering his style and techniques can help inform our photpgrpahy here and we will support you in exploring this concept during the workshop.

Very few places can offer such variety of subject matter and here we can create our own, new and original work away from the ‘bucket list’ locations found elsewhere.

From our base in Margate we are ideally placed to reach the various corners of the County in search of our photographs and take advanatage of the sunrises nearby to us without too much extra driving (or earlier than necessary starts!).

This location photography is then developed during our digital skills sessions where we will show you image processing in both Lightroom and Photoshop. We will also discuss, printing and album making, design and sequencing to emphasise this fun, creative part of the final image production process. The emphasis is on encouraging group discussion and lively debate between all participants and we will also use this time to look over and review some of the photographs from our outings.

This has proved a very popular part of our trips and we believe this strikes a good balance between shooting on location and practical help with the necessary post production side so that you can leave with a wealth of new knowledge and skills to compliment your photography out in the field.

This workshop is appropriate to anyone comfortable with short walks to each location from our parking places.

We will look to take advantage of the creative opportunities from dawn to dusk.  The general format of our day is to photograph at dawn, then enjoy a late breakfast at our hotel before heading out for the day, returning for supper in the evening.  We will of course stop for refreshments during the day.  For supper, you are most welcome to eat with us as a group or make your own arrangements.  Lizzie and I will arrange a table at the hotel and perhaps another local restaurant during our stay.  Margate has some fine places to eat and drink!!

Kit & Caboodle:

• All your usual camera gera, tripod & filters!
• Wellies are highly recommended.
• Waterproof trousers and coats are advisable anywhere by the sea.
• A thermos flask for tea if you feel regular tea/coffee is required, although we are rarely too far from a coffee shop.
• Snacks; a few biscuits and/or fruit in your bag is handy for nourishment throughout the day.
