We're fully booked for this trip in Spring 2021 but we have scheduled a autumn 2022 trip; see the 'Autumn' listing on the Workships page!
This is a unique photo tour to Zagoria, a region of northern Greece, one of the world’s most stunning locations at a wonderful time of year with the absolute highlight being Meteora and the Vikos Gorge - the second deepest gorge in the world, after the Grand Canyon.
This tour fee includes breakfast and 3 course traditional Greek suppers in our hotel and a local Taverna with up to two drinks of your choice per night. There are plenty of vegetarian options included along with Greek classics like lamd, souvlaki and spinach & feta pies, all washed down with excellent local wine or beer!
From crystal clear blue rivers, rugged mountainous scenery and endless trees and forests bursting with autumn colour to picturesque villages, characterful tavernas, arched stone bridges and cliff top monasteries. This area is spectacular and if this sounds like a photographer's paradise, then rest assured it is!
We will be based in the village of Dilofo. From here we will enjoy the Spring colours and flowers and experience the ever changing light at dawn and dusk. We'll also learn how to get the best out of the light at all times of day. Our tour culminates in two nigts at Meteora exploring the karst landscape and monasteries perched on the limestone pinnacles before we return to Thessaloniki for flights home.
You will undoubtedly see some great vistas but we will also be concentrating on the smaller, more intimate details to be found within the landscape - looking at ways of capturing our surroundings with more abstract interpretations, helping you to get out of your comfort zone and try a few different techniques and approaches to photographing this wonderful location.
This location photography is then developed during our digital skills sessions held back at our hotel where we will show you the fundamental techniques required to process your photographs, including exposure blending, using layers and masks and how to work efficiently in both Lightroom and Photoshop. The emphasis is on encouraging group discussion and lively debate between all participants and we will also use this time to look over and review some of the photographs from our outings.
This has proved a very popular part of our trips, as it helps take the photographs shot on location through the digital darkroom, ready for print or web display. Lizzie and Alex will share their processing tips with you and are also on hand for support and questions post workshop. We believe this strikes a good balance between shooting on location and practical help with the necessary post production side so that you can leave with a wealth of new knowledge and skills to compliment your photography out in the field.
Our workshops are very much focussed on you and we will plan a full day of photography each day and accompany you as we explore the area. We like to work with our group to ensure we give you the best possible experience and between us we can offer plenty of one to one time to ensure you have a fulfilling and rewarding workshop.
This is a Tripod Travels workshop - running in conjunction with my good friend and photographer Lizzie Shepherd. Lizzie and I have thoroughly enjoyed working together for several years now and we hope you will join us on this trip!
Spring in Meteora & Zagoria, Northern Greece FAQs
Can I borrow a Kase filters kit?
As a Kase ambassador I have access to demo kits you are welcome to try. The Kase filter kit is the best filter kit on the market and I use it in my professsional work. The kit includes a big stopper, little stopper, polariser and ND grads. Please ask in advance and advise of the filter ring sizes of any lenses you may be bringing. You will find this marked on the lens as you look at the front lens element and around the edge. The measurement will be expressed in mm.
How fit do I need to be for Northern Greece?
Although there are a few roadside locations in the area, many of the best locations involve a fair amount of walking, some of which is very steep. By comparison, we would say it is rouughly equivalent to the English Lakes District. There will always be options to sit out any of the more off the beaten track locations but some of the most spectacular views do involve some less straight forward terrain, with some steep ascents and descents albeit they're not particularly long walks. If in doubt, please ask us for more detail.
I have special dietary requirements, is this tour suitable for me?
Yes, absolutely. Tell me in advance what your needs are and we will ensure that these are catered for. We will eat in a variety of local and independent pubs, restaurants and cafes serving a full and diverse menu of food for vegetarians and vegans.
I’m travelling alone, can I have single occupancy rooms?
Yes, this can be arranged and we will arrange for your room to be en suite.
If it’s Fully booked what can I do?
Please get in touch via email or telephone and we can put you on the reserve list. If a place becomes available we'll let you know.
What kit & caboodle should I bring?
A camera, tripod and a selection of lenses - ideally covering ultra wide angle to telephoto. Tripods are essential-let me know if you dont own one. Also spare batteries and memory cards.
If you dont have any filters (polariser, ND Grads, Stopper Filters etc) and want to try them and learn how to use them, we have kits you can borrow. Just tell us in advannce.
Also, bring good walking boots and clothing for any kind of weather and wellies are strongly recommended for UK workshops. Comfortable backpack and waterproofs for you and your gear. It can be chilly in the evening so warm clothes are recommended.
Water bottle will be handy as at times we will be out in the open but we are never far from a cafe, pub and/or public toilet.
What level of photographer does this workshop suit?
Photographers of any level are welcome - whether a beginner or with many years experience. We are exploring an area looking to create images regardless of your level of expeerience I can help as muchh as you need. With a small group of only eight participants there will be more than enough opportunity to cover everything from the basic skills of landscape photography (if required) to more advanced, creative techniques.
Where will we be staying in Greece?
We will spend the first few nights at the beautiful and historical hotel, Archontiko, in the conveniently situated village of Dilofo. Breakfast is included and we will usually have our evening meals in the village as well. There are various tavernas across the region where we can also eat. We will then move onto one of the comfortable hotels in Meteora. As were not visiting in high season this is an ideal timme to visit and again we will be in very comfortable rooms with en suites.
How Do I Get to Greece in Spring?
A number of airlines offer flights to Thessaloniki (which is the main city in the North) and, once these are released for April 2020, we will advise which flights we'll be meeting. We drive you to and from the airport, which is around a three hour drive. Looking at flights this year, we'd expect an early departure from Gatiwck and a midday flight home. Currently, Easy Jet have published flights to the end of March so April will be avaible soon we hope.
What Are Lunch & Evening Meal Arrangements in Greece?
We will always have breakfast (usually after a morning photo shoot). Each day will include a stop at a Taverna, restaurant or cafe for lunch unless we grab something on the go to maintainn times on our itinerary. This keeps our time flexible for our photography needs. For supper, we will reserve a atable at the local Taverna for the group and it is entirely optional whether you join us or prefer some time to yourself. Our aim is to give you a good overall Greek experience in addition to the photography. You are, of course, very welcome to enjoy your meals elsewhere at places nearby you like the look of if you prefer some time to yourself.
What Sort Of Creative Experience Can I Expect In Greece?
Lizzie and I have been full time photographers for many years now(!) and we both have a lot of experience in helping other photographers with their creative work. We both create images for our own artisitc direction as well as for our clients who we shoot to commission for. Alex has also taught photography at his local University and received a photogrpahic education under the eminent social documentary photogrpaheer, Dan Meadows, at Cardiff University. This means you have two established creatives working across a variety of photography styles and techniques who will gladly guide you in your own creative journey and make you think about the direction you are taking with your work and what you wish to achieve.
