Autumn in Northern Greece - Mountains & Meteora Photography Tour

£1975.00 - £300.00 Deposit

Fully Booked

We're fuly booked for 2024, if you'd like to come next year, pease email me as we can offer you a place first before making it more widely availble.

This is a unique photo tour to northern Greece where will explore the mountains of Zagoria and the seascapes of the northern Aegean Sea.

This is a wonderful time of year to visit the Vikos Gorge - the second deepest gorge in the world, after the Grand Canyon, and explore the old stone, pack horse bridges, valleys and forests in the region.

In Meteora we will explore the amazing towers of rock with their moansteries.

The fee includes breakfast (one of the best we’ve ever had on our travels!) and we have agreed a fixed E25 fee for a 3 course traditional Greek suppers 9inc two alcoholic drinks)  in our hotel or a local Taverna.  There are plenty of vegetarian options included along with Greek classics like lamb, souvlaki and spinach & feta pies, all washed down with excellent local wine or beer!

The Landscapes

Our first 4 nights will be based in the village of Dilofo, Zagoria.  From here we will experience the ever changing light and colour at dawn and dusk, as well as exploring the region in the day at carefully selected locations Lizzie and I know of.

The mountains are characterised by crystal clear blue rivers, rugged mountainous scenery and endless trees and forests bursting with autumn colour, to picturesque villages, characterful tavernas and arched stone bridges.

You will undoubtedly see some great vistas but we will also be concentrating on the smaller, more intimate details to be found within the landscape - looking at ways of capturing our surroundings with more abstract interpretations and try a few different techniques and approaches to photographing this wonderful location.

We will then travel south to Meteora and spend 2 nights there exploring the area and a number of key viewpoonts we have scouted out.

Our location photography is then developed during our digital skills sessions held back at our hotel where we will show you our  techniques required to process photographs, including exposure blending, using layers and masks and how to work efficiently in both Lightroom and Photoshop.

This has proved a very popular part of our trips, as it helps take the photographs shot on location through the digital darkroom, ready for print or web display. Lizzie and Alex will share their processing tips with you.

We will also discuss creating a theme with your photos and think about how they might print and be displayed, be it on a wall or in a hand made photo book, examples of which we can show you.

How we like to do things(!):

Our workshops are very much focussed on you and the social side as well as the photographic opportunities so we will plan a full day of photography each day and ensure we enjoy fine food and rest stops in the villages we find to enjoy the wider cultural experience of the regions we visit.

We will always accompany you as we explore the area as we like to work with our group to ensure we give you the best possible experience and between us we can offer plenty of one to one time to ensure you have a fulfilling and rewarding trip.

This is a Tripod Travels workshop provided by me and Lizzie Shepherd. Lizzie and I have thoroughly enjoyed working together for several years now and we hope you will join us on this trip!

Autumn in Northern Greece - Mountains & Meteora Photography Tour FAQs

  • If it’s Fully booked what can I do?

Please get in touch via email or telephone and we can put you on the reserve list.  If a place becomes available we'll let you know.

  • How Do I Get To Greece in Autumn?

A number of airlines offer flights to Thessaloniki (which is the main city in the North) and, once these are released for October/November next year, we will advise which flights we'll be meeting. We drive you to and from the airport, which is around a three hour drive from Zagoria and we will require an aditional 2 hours to reach the coastline when we transfer to that region.

  • How fit do I need to be for Northern Greece?

Although there are a few roadside locations in the area, many of the best locations involve some walking over rough paths and terrain. By comparison, we would say it is roughly equivalent to the English Lakes District only without lots of long hill climbing!  There will always be options to sit out any of the more off the beaten track locations but some of the most spectacular views do involve some less straight forward terrain, albeit they're not particularly long walks. If in doubt, please ask us for more detail.

  • What kit & caboodle should I bring?

A camera, tripod and a selection of lenses - ideally covering ultra wide angle to telephoto.  Tripods are essential-let me know if you dont own one.  Also spare batteries and memory cards.

If you dont have any filters (polariser, ND Grads, Stopper Filters etc) and want to try them and learn how to use them, we have kits you can borrow.  Just tell us in advannce.

Also, bring good walking boots and clothing for any kind of weather and wellies are strongly recommended for UK workshops. Comfortable backpack and waterproofs for you and your gear.  It can be chilly in the evening so warm clothes are recommended.

Water bottle will be handy as at times we will be out in the open but we are never far from a cafe, pub and/or public toilet.

  • What level of photographer does this workshop suit?

Photographers of any level are welcome - whether a beginner or with many years experience. We are exploring an area looking to create images regardless of your level of experience we can help as much as you need.  With a small group of only eight participants there will be more than enough opportunity to cover everything from the basic skills of landscape photography (if required) to more advanced, creative techniques.

  • Where will we be staying in Greece?

We will spend the first few nights at the beautiful and historical hotel, Archontiko, in the conveniently situated village of Dilofo. An oustanding Greek breakfast is included and we expect we will have our evening meals here or in the nearby village taverna. We will then move onto our comfortable en suite accommmodation in Sarti, Sithonia.

  • What Are Lunch & Evening Meal Arrangements in Greece?

We will always have breakfast (and, where its included in the room) at our accommodation, usually after a morning photo shoot.  Each day will include a stop at a Taverna, restaurant or cafe for lunch unless we grab something on the go to maintainn times on our itinerary.  This keeps our time flexible for our photography needs. For supper, we will reserve a table at the accommmodation or a local Taverna we know of and it is entirely optional whether you join us or prefer some time to yourself.  Our aim is to give you a good overall Greek experience in addition to the photography.  You are, of course, very welcome to enjoy your meals elsewhere at places nearby you like the look of if you prefer some time to yourself.
